Ever since my son was born he has been a night owl. Throughout his public education days it was a major struggle to get him out of bed and to school on time. Once his got out of high school and went off to college I encouraged him to sign up only for afternoon and evening courses, which he did. Thankfully he managed to get through college that way.

Now, however, real life has hit and there are days when he just has to get up early and go to work. It is very difficult to change your sleep schedule around, and recent studies seem to indicate that it can actually be detrimental to your health to have to work rotating shifts. Fortunately for him, he does manage to get mostly afternoon work at his job.

The challenge that I am referring to at the beginning of this post is in regards to when he decides in the middle of the night to cook up something in the kitchen. He’s pretty quiet, but the smell of what he is cooking sometimes wakes me up. Once I’m awake I often find it is difficult to fall back to sleep. I think I need to ask him to refrain from cooking when I’m sleeping – just eat cereal or a cold cut sandwich. Let the mama get her forty winks in!

Today at work I was surprised to see a man come into the pharmacy with only half of his face shaved.  Half of his face was a full “Santa Claus” beard, the other half had about three days worth of stubble on his face.  He had to pick up a lot of medicines; I have to assume that he had some kind of surgery done on the side that had only the stubble, and it made me sorry for the guy.  But I cannot imagine what in the world was going on in any one’s mind when they decided to only shave half of his face?  I mean the difference is so extreme!  I don’t know, maybe he is some kind of religion that frowns on men shaving, but is okay with medical treatments.  What do you think?

One of the rules of the store is “no cell phones allowed at work.” Every couple of days one of the managers will come back behind the counter and catch one of us using our cell phone and he will scold us that we are not supposed to have our cell phones with us. Whenever he does that I always reply that when the company provides us with cell phone lockers then that won’t be an issue anymore.

We are not supposed to bring our coats, or purses, or bags of any kind – not even lunch bags! But the company gives us no place to hang our coats or store our purses or bags or cell phones. This is the first place that I’ve ever worked that didn’t have at least small phone lockers in the back room for people to be able to put their wallet, keys, and phone in!

To be honest, the only time I use my cell phone at work is to call across town to the other store to see if they have an item in stock that a customer needs. And the other girls use their cell phones to look up work related subjects on the Internet. I think even if we had a cell phone storage locker system I don’t think we would use it. But we’re not going to tell the boss that. No, that will be our little secret. Shhhhh……

One of the things that can get quite aggravating at work is when several people want to use the inventory barcode scanners (they call them “guns”) at the same time. There are only two in the store, and inevitably one of them has a dead battery and needs to be plugged in to recharge for several hours. Personally I think the store should order at least two more of those things – the store is almost always in an uproar over the durn things!

There are a lot of people that don’t pay attention to the illuminated signs on the roof of the drive-through windows that tell people that use the tube need to use it for dropping off their orders, not picking up. Several times a day I have to advise people that they need to drive around the building and get into the other lane to pick up their orders. Usually that is the time of day when the pick up window has a long line and some smarty-pants thinks that they are going to beat the system by coming to the other side and bully me into letting them pick up their order. Too bad for them – now they have to get into a longer line than it would have been if they had just taken their proper spot in the first place!
