We have a customer that calls our pharmacy every day as soon as it opens. She talks to one of us for at least thirty minutes. She is a very nice lady, but her timing is really bad! When the pharmacy first opens it is slammed with customers wanting to pick up the prescriptions that they called in for refills overnight. No one worked overnight, so the opening crew needs to hustle and fill them all as soon as possible.

Well, today we received a huge gift basket full of fruit, crackers, cake and snack foods delivered to us. The card said it was from the lady who calls us every morning, thank us for our patience! Wasn’t that nice of her! I think accepting it is a violation of the company’s policies, but I’m not the one the basket was addressed to, and I’m not the one who accepted it, so I won’t get in trouble. It would be interesting to see if anyone DOES get in trouble for it!

Post contributed by Hilton Miranda

My sister and I have been talking about our energy providers a lot recently and trying to decide if we want to go green. We were using Stream Energy Comparison to see how much her provider differed. We both thought that making more green decisions would be harder than it is. Everyone keeps talking about going green, but really I did not know what people meant when they said it. It just sounded like a catch phrase to me. I think it started with my sister always following me room to room and turning all the lights off. I thought it was annoying at first, but she explained to me that we should conserve energy and lights were a part of that. She convinced me we needed to do it with the lights, the water and even with how much trash we threw away. Now the next step for us is choosing a provider that will allow us to keep saving energy and making green decisions. My sister says that no matter who the provider, it really comes down to decisions like turning out the light.

Last night a woman came in for some medical advice. I find it interesting how many people come to the pharmacy to ask for medical advice before calling their doctors!

This woman was concerned that her bi-polar daughter might be pregnant. She had her tubes tied a few years ago, but was now displaying all of the symptoms of pregnancy. So the mother came in to ask if it was possible she was pregnant. Knowing that I’m not allowed by law to give medical advice, I was skating on thin ice. So I told her that I had a girl friend who had her tubes tied and got pregnant a few years later anyway, so yes it was possible.

So then she asked what should she do. I told her to buy one of the early pregnancy test kits and use it to find out if the daughter really is pregnant. I told her that there are other medical conditions that could mimic pregnancy, but she should do the test kit and then call her doctor. She thanked me for my advice and told me that she hoped it was one of the other medical conditions and not pregnancy. I kept my mouth shut at that point, other than telling her to consult the doctor. To the best of my knowledge the other medical conditions that can mimic pregnancy are not good at all. I think pregnancy would be preferable!

After the woman left I apologized to the pharmacist for not asking her to come and counsel the patient. She was within earshot the whole time. She told me that I told the woman exactly what she would have told her, but next time to call her into the conversation. She was nice about it, but I felt bad anyway.

Thank goodness my kids have finished their college education and we no longer have to search for financial aid information to get them to have enough money to sig up for their college courses. It was becoming extremely difficult to get the help we needed for one of my sons that struggled with his grades. But now we are in the stage of repaying his student loans, which is another challenge on it’s own right.

When I was talking with Madeline about how we had to search far and wide for the financial aid, she was telling me that she had heard that her son might qualify for a scholarship for left handed students. I had never heard of any scholarships based on something like that! What will they think of next!

There are a lot of people that don’t pay attention to the illuminated signs on the roof of the drive-through windows that tell people that use the tube need to use it for dropping off their orders, not picking up. Several times a day I have to advise people that they need to drive around the building and get into the other lane to pick up their orders. Usually that is the time of day when the pick up window has a long line and some smarty-pants thinks that they are going to beat the system by coming to the other side and bully me into letting them pick up their order. Too bad for them – now they have to get into a longer line than it would have been if they had just taken their proper spot in the first place!

With the shop almost completed, my hubby and I have started to go to local networking meetings to let the local businessmen know that in a few weeks we’ll be open for business. He’d like to focus on working on turning classic cars into hot rods on the days that he feels good. Our neighbor George has already asked us if he can come and use the lift when he needs to perform a few rv repairs before his next camping trip. Sounds to me as if we are going to make a small fortune just renting out some lift time.

One of the things that I find frustrating is trying to see the address numbers on mailboxes when I’m going somewhere for the first time. For example, when I was trying to go to the veterinarian’s office the other day I was driving slowly down the road looking for the numbers on the buildings. I noticed that a lot of the businesses had some really nice address plaques on their buildings, but I was frustrated because the address that I was given did not match up to the numbers on the buildings on the road. So it seemed to me as if the post office had renumbered the buildings on the street but that no one on the street had bothered to change their lawn plaques to reflect the changes that were made. I finally found the office just by seeing the name of the company on a big sign out by the road.

It wasn’t until I was actually walking up to the door when I saw a couple of house numbers mounted on whitehall mailboxes near the door that had the business name, the doctors names and the street address on it. There was no way that any of that could have been read from the road. That is one of my biggest complaints about businesses – sometimes when you are looking for a particular address you just can’t find the building numbers and that gets incredibly frustrating.

Andrew dropped into the store today to say hello. He brought a couple of pizzas from Domino’s with him, and we had the chance to visit for a bit in between customers. We haven’t seen him since he left for school a year and a half ago. I can still remember the last time we saw him, right before he left; he was so excited! He is well on his way now to his final semester and is getting ready to take his gp exam. He was talking about how his univeristy had sponsored a job fair and there was a booth of information about gp recruitment and filling out the gp application.

Andrew has been working long and hard to pursue his dream, and he is a wonderful young man. I hope he does well. I have to admit that I miss seeing his smiling face here at work, and as nice as his replacement is here at work, it’s just not the same since he left to finish his schooling.

One of the things that I’ve noticed lately when I’ve gone shopping is a tendency of the grocery stores to have enclosed bulletin boards for their community announcements. I think that having enclosed cork bulletin boards in their foyer is a good idea because it helps to keep notices from falling onto the floor and getting trampled by the shoppers.

The only drawback that I can see in having enclosed fabric bulletin boards (or cork ones) is that sometimes the stores keep them locked so that you have to ask someone to come and unlock it for you to put your notice up. And if what you were hoping to do is pin several business cards on the board, having it locked prevents people from taking one of your business cards. I like them much better if they are left unlocked.

Did you ever wonder how it works out that when you use a search engine to find a product or service, how the order of presentation is determined? Well, it turns out there is a whole behind the scenes process called Search Engine Optimization (SEO) that determines that. And there is a big money business behind that process!

A business that wants to be one of the top companies listed for a search like that certainly has its work cut out for it! Some of the most technologically savvy businesses would be quick to obtain guaranteed seo services with a company whose sole business is making sure that their client’s web page is near the top of the search. Doing that maximizes the efficiency of the effort; hiring a professional that guarantees results seems to me to be a no-brainer. Why waste valuable time re-inventing the wheel?
