When I think of a person going to a spot like that I think of them going to a spa to get facials, manicures and pedicures. I often wonder if allowing people to be in such comfort while they are trying to fix their problems is really going to be as effective as it would be if the accommodations were a little bit more spartan.

Last night a woman came in for some medical advice. I find it interesting how many people come to the pharmacy to ask for medical advice before calling their doctors!

This woman was concerned that her bi-polar daughter might be pregnant. She had her tubes tied a few years ago, but was now displaying all of the symptoms of pregnancy. So the mother came in to ask if it was possible she was pregnant. Knowing that I’m not allowed by law to give medical advice, I was skating on thin ice. So I told her that I had a girl friend who had her tubes tied and got pregnant a few years later anyway, so yes it was possible.

So then she asked what should she do. I told her to buy one of the early pregnancy test kits and use it to find out if the daughter really is pregnant. I told her that there are other medical conditions that could mimic pregnancy, but she should do the test kit and then call her doctor. She thanked me for my advice and told me that she hoped it was one of the other medical conditions and not pregnancy. I kept my mouth shut at that point, other than telling her to consult the doctor. To the best of my knowledge the other medical conditions that can mimic pregnancy are not good at all. I think pregnancy would be preferable!

After the woman left I apologized to the pharmacist for not asking her to come and counsel the patient. She was within earshot the whole time. She told me that I told the woman exactly what she would have told her, but next time to call her into the conversation. She was nice about it, but I felt bad anyway.

So many people complain that they don’t want the government to provide free health care to the taxpayers of the country, but in my business I see so many sick people that cannot afford to pay for their medical expenses and it makes me very sad. The Free Clinic does not provide Free medical care simply based on need, it requires people to be employed. So where does that leave the people who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own? Down and out. I wish that at least flu shots were free!

I like the spray salad dressing that they have available. You can really control the amount of the dressing this way. There is nothing worse that putting way too much dressing on your salad and then it becomes a soggy mess. A nice find spray is perfect!

Even though I got new glasses recently, I find myself needing to use a magnifying glass to read a lot of things. Especially credit card bills. Are banks deliberately making the print on them smaller? If so, do you think that it is to save money by crowding more items on a piece of paper, or do you think they are just trying to make it harder to read so the consumer won’t look at the statements very closely and object to things they are finding on their bills?

Makes me feel like my eyeglasses aren’t doing their job correctly, and when I complain to the eye doctor she tells me that my vision with my glasses is fine. Very aggravating.

Sometimes I perform mystery shopping for a little extra income. One of my recent assignments was to take one of my pets to a local veterinarian. The payment was for $25 plus reimbursement up to $100 for services. Well my cat was overdue for a couple of shots so I took him in. In this tight economy I was thrilled to be able to get his shots for free. Well as part of the routine check-up they wanted to run a whole bunch of tests on him, and they gave me a pre-invoice estimate of the cost of everything they wanted to do, and it was over $700! Yowzer! I quickly, but politely declined all of those tests and said I’d just pay for the wellness check and the shots.

Geezum beezum pets are expensive!

One of the things that the other ladies that I work with in the pharmacy and I agree upon is that we find it awkward that right in front of our work space is the shelving unit for the display of condoms and sex enhancement lotions. There are too many customers that start to ask us questions about the products that we don’t have any idea what the answer is, and since it really is not our job to know those details, we really don’t any desire to learn about them for purposes of work! Sometimes I think that these people are trying to embarrass us!

I used to have really long hair, almost down to my waist. Well, I know that long hair makes older women look even older, so last spring I decided to go to the local cosmetology school and have them cut my hair really short, and then donate the hair to the Locks of Love organization.

I thought that was doing two good deeds at once – giving the cosmetology students a “practice” head to work on, and donating the hair to the organization that makes wigs for cancer victims.

I loved my new shorter hair do, it did make me look much younger, and I got lots of compliments on it. But, I am thinking about letting it grow out again and donating another round of “haircut” to Locks of Love again. That is a relatively painless and inexpensive thing that I can do to improve the quality of life for a cancer victim. I think it will take me about two years to get the length I need to donate to them – if I recall correctly they only accept hair that is 11″ long. I’ll have to double check on that, it might be 9″, but I’m pretty sure it is 11″ that they need.

Over the years, I’ve seen so many health fads come and go, I simply can’t count them all. About twenty years ago my in-laws got interested in Shaklee vitamins and products, and they were always trying to get me to buy their Shaklee products. They were also trying to get me to become a Shaklee distributor.

They were trying to convince me that the road to better health was through taking their 23 vitamin pills every day, and to use their colon cleansing product. I suffer from Irritable Bowel syndrome, and I was simply not interested in taking anything that was going to have me spending even more time in the bathroom.

To be honest, the one and only time I tried the Shaklee vitamins, I threw up. I was mortified! My doctor told me that natural vitamins are often more difficult for the stomach to digest, so I stopped taking them. Every time I tried natural vitamins since then I have become extremely nauseous. So, I am wary of any product that has anything to do with my digestive system.

That being said, there are a lot of people “out there” who are convinced that the only reason that they are healthy is because of their “natural vitamin” regimen, and their regular use of a colon cleansing product. I think if it works for them, that is wonderful! Just don’t try to get ME to use it!

I was just remembering a customer that came into the store last week that I wanted to comment on. She looked like she was in her 80′s at least, but she dressed like she thought she was only 16! And she had on so much cologne it could choke a horse! It was really hard keeping myself from laughing out loud when I saw her. She was wearing a skirt that was what I would call a micro-mini – not something you can bend over in and remain dignified! I’m not quite sure who she was trying to impress, but it really was pathetic. I wish that people would learn to dress a little bit more demurely when they get older! And use less cologne! If I dress like that when I’m in my 80′s I hope someone tells me to grow up and act my age!
