Tomorrow I am acoompanying my mother to the hospital. She is scheduled to have surgery to remove a tumor in her right lung. The doctor told me that he is sure that it is cancer. His plan is to remove the lump and send it to the lab for testing. The results will come in while she is still under anesthesia, and if the find that it is benign they will just close up the wound. If malignant, they will have to remove the entire upper third of her lung and then will have to plan what kind of therapy to follow.

I’m trying to keep her spirits up, but we are both quite worried. She is eighty years old and is not sure that she has the strength to battle the “big C.” Regardless, it will be a long road ahead. I don’t want to lose my mom.

I don’t know if it is stress related, or inherited, but it seems that lately there have been a lot of times when my eyes feel like there are eyelashes fallen into the eye and I end up rubbing my eyes and pulling at my eyelashes. A lot of the times when I do that, several eyelashes come out and I see them on my fingers. I’ve heard that when eyelashes fall out that they don’t grow back. Well, I don’t know if that’s true or not, but if it is true I may have to look into buying some of the ds laboratories revita eyelash growth product that I’ve heard so much about.

Ever since we moved here I’ve tried to get my husband to try the Perkins Restaurant with me. I’ve never eaten at one, and I like trying out new places to eat. Unfortunately my husband resists trying anything new. He has trouble adjusting to change. Sometimes I wonder what in the world happened in his childhood that traumatized him so much that he has such a challenge with that!

Anyway, today my mother asked me to go with her to a doctor’s appointment to take notes about what the doctor said. I did go with her (and it’s a good thing I did, there were a lot of notes to take!) and on the way home she asked me if I had ever eaten at a Perkins restaurant. I told her that I had not, but have always wanted to try one. So, we ate at Perkins! The food was good, the wait staff was very friendly and helpful, and we brought a freshly baked cherry pie home with us to share with my hubby. I hope to go back there and eat there again in the future. It was a good experience.

Do you remember a time when if someone told you to “stick it in your ear” it was supposed to be an insult? Recently my hubby gave me a pair of in ear buds to use when I’m listening to music while I’m sitting at the computer, but I have always had trouble keeping things like that in my ears. My doctor has told me that I have the smallest ear canals he has ever seen in an adult, and because of that he says that it is amazing that I can even hear!

At least now I don’t feel quite so bad when I ask people to repeat themselves – the doctor has given me a very good reason for not being able to hear very well!

When I found out that we were going to get a pretty good refund on our income tax this year, I started to day dream about buying a small hot tub or spa to put on our deck that overlooks our back yard. I’d definitely need to buy an insulated hot tub cover as well to keep the leaves, bird droppings and bugs out of the tub, and to keep the heat in to minimize the cost of heating up the water. I wonder if we can get one that is heated by propane instead of electricity. I’d like to find a way to minimize the cost.

Picked up a bag of those new cookies that I’ve been wanting to try. I got a coupon from the Sunday newspaper to save 50 cents and the grocery store had them on sale, so I got the bag at essentially half price. I don’t mind trying something when it’s free or deeply discounted. If it turns out that I don’t like them, I bet there will be someone in the house who gives them a try and eats them other than me. And if they are really good, they will disappear very fast.

The cookies are called “Newton’s Fruit Thins.” I noticed they have a honey and fig flavor, a cranberry orange flavor and a blueberry flavor. I decided to try the fig and honey – after all, that is what makes fig newton’s famous.

I was expecting a soft cakey cookie, like the fig newtons, but these are more like graham crackers. The bag says that the cookie part is whole grain, only 5 grams of fat per serving (three big cookies equal one serving) and no high fructose corn syrup is used.

I tasted one after I got home and I like it, but it is NOT your mama’s fig newton.

When I first heard about using dryer balls to reduce the drying time of clothes, and to eliminate the need for using fabric softener, I thought that I would like to give them a try. I found some for sale at the store where I work and bought about six packages of them. I thought that my sisters and parents would like to give them a try as well, and since I got them for a very good price (thanks to the employee discount!) that it would be an inexpensive way to let other folks know that I care.

The dryer balls do seem to work the way that they are supposed to work. However, I am a little bit disappointed in how quickly they break and fall apart! And since I bought them at the store I’ve read some articles about how some dryer balls are made of a product that people really should be avoiding. Since then I’ve bought some of the dryer balls over the Internet that are supposed to be made of a safe product, and hopefully last longer. The biggest problem that I have with them now, though, is that when I empty the dryer, the dryer balls are sometimes hiding inside the clothing that I am taking out and plays hard-to-get. Overall, though, I plan to keep using them, I think that they are a good investment.

Have you ever ordered a Mail Order Cheesecake? My sister sent me a link to a website that sells a large variety of cheesecakes and ships them to the recipient. She knows how much I love cheesecake, so I don’t know if she sent me the link out of love, or out of sibling rivalry – hoping that I’d gain more weight!

Over the past years I’ve gained about twenty pounds and I have been forced to buy some new clothes to wear. I was hoping to lose the weight before summer came so I would not have to buy a new summer wardrobe, but the weight is a lot harder to lose than it is to find!

So anyway, I was looking at the website and saw a yummy recipe for making some raspberry truffle cheesecake. Loving recipes as I do, I went ahead and clicked on the link and was seeing how easy it would be to make my own from scratch. I found myself wondering if I would be able to substitute the cream cheese with fat free cream cheese, and substitute the sugar with Splenda or Truvia, and perhaps make the cheesecake a little bit healthier. Have you tried doing that yourself? If so, were you happy with the results?

A couple of weeks ago I found a really great deal on the nomorerack.com website that I learned about. I really LOVE that website – they have so many great bargains! Well, this particular bargain was for a pair of boots that were a knock-off of the popular UGH boots. From what I understand, that particular style is “out” right now, but the boots looked so warm and comfy that I decided to go ahead and order them. I’m not always about what is “in” I am more about comfort and value. And I’ve noticed that when I am home that my feet are almost always cold, so I thought that I’d buy these particular boots and wear them in the house instead of outside, as a way to keep my feet warm.

I usually wear a size 6 1/2 shoe, but my foot is wide, so I decided to go ahead and order the boots a couple of sizes larger than I usually wear. I’d rather have boots on my feet that are a little bit too large than too small. Well, I went ahead and ordered size 8 1/2, thinking that would be leaving me plenty of room to wear some nice heavy socks. The boots arrived today, and they are almost too small! I can wear them with regular socks, but I will not be able to wear them with heavy socks. That is a true aggravation – ordering something a couple of sizes larger with the thought that they will be too large, and then having them arrive almost too small! I guess I should just be really glad that I did not order my regular size!

Ever since I can remember I’ve needed eye glasses. The problem was, however, that the eye doctors kept telling my mother that I was “just” far-sighted and that I would outgrow the problem, so there was really no need for me to wear them. Being an avid reader, my brow was constantly wrinkled, my eyes squinting so I could read the books that I loved so dearly.

By the time I was sixteen, it finally became clear to the eye doctors that I really did need glasses for school. My first pair of prescription glasses was wire-rimmed and I thought I looked so “cool” – like some of the rock stars of the decade. Eventually the thrill of wearing glasses faded and suddenly all of the “cool” people were wearing contact lenses. I tried contacts a couple of different times but I had a very difficult time getting them to fit right because of my astigmatism, and had an even more difficult time getting them to come out. Eventually I found out that due to my need for prism in my prescription that I was going to need to wear glasses anyway unless I have a surgical procedure done on the muscles in my eyes. From what I understand my insurance will not pay for that procedure, so I am guess that I will just continue to wear glasses for many years to come.
